2IC/Assistant Manager

We are looking for a motivated and reliable person with 2+ years experience in dairy farming to join us as an assistant manager (2IC) for the 2026/27 season. This role would be a great opportunity for a motivated individual who is very keen to learn and advance their career in dairying. You will be working closely with young, motivated farm owners who have progressed in the industry through to farm ownership before the age of 30. We take pride in our success and would like the opportunity to help an individual on their path to progression and growth in the industry. You will have the opportunity to learn more about farm management and a very broad range of skills, from pasture and livestock management all the way through to business management.
About the farm:
Located 8 minutes out of Okato in Coastal Taranaki. A friendly farming community with good local schooling and amenities. Peak milking 460 pedigree Holstein and Jersey cows. 158ha milking platform which consists of prime flat coastal land. Milking through a 30 aside herringbone shed with ACRs and Inshed feeding. Operating a split calving structure to minimise cow wastage, optimise feed supply and demand and reduce milking duration at times throughout the season. Running two herds, with 2 people in the cowshed. Part time casual labour employed to cover regular time off, enable flexibility in the system and help through peak times (calvings and matings). We are passionate about cow breeding and genetics, with an aim to continue building an elite herd of profitable cows that are a pleasure to milk and work with. System 3-4 farm with in-shed feed and summer crops grown. Achieving over 500 kgMS/cow. Approx. 100 replacements reared each year which remain on farm until May, when they head to grazing. We take pride in rearing well grown youngstock.
Key responsibilities include:
- Milking, animal health and effluent management.
- Feed management and pasture planning.
- Maintain high standards of farm presentation and performance.
- Strong shed hygiene and milk quality awareness.
- Minda recording and planning.
- Helping manage animal health and welfare, including identifying issues and carrying out treatments.
- Operate tractors and farm machinery safely and efficiently.
- Knowledge of reproduction and heat detection.
- Support calf rearing operations.
- Assist with farm maintenance and upkeep of buildings and equipment.
- Effective communication with the farm owner and casual staff.
- Ensuring compliance with regulatory standards and requirements.
- Step up and run the farm in the occasional absence of the Farm owner.
- Performing other general farm duties.
Skills and experience required:
- Previous dairy farming experience, ideally a minimum of 2 years in New Zealand.
- Strong stock sense.
- Confident tractor and motorbike driving skills.
- Strong organisation and a proactive, can-do approach with a strong work ethic.
- Good communication and leadership skills.
- An eagerness to learn and develop their skills.
- A genuine interest in career progression within the dairy industry is preferred, but not a must.

Competitive remuneration will be offered based on experience.
