Thinning is performed when the fruit is small. Thinning is the removal of unwanted fruit from the tree so that the tree has an ideal crop load and the fruit is able to mature to a suitable size. When the fruit is removed, it is dropped to the ground in the centre of the row so that it does not fall through the tree and damage the remaining fruit. A ladder or hydralada is used to reach the top branches.
The harvesting of fruit involves the removal of the fruit from the tree using the correct technique, carefully placing them in the picking bucket and, when the picking bucket is full, gently transferring them into a bin. Fruit is removed from the bottom of the tree first and then a ladder or hydralada is used to pick the fruit from the top branches.
Training will be provided in:
* selecting the fruit that is to be removed.
* the correct technique for removing the fruit.
* the correct technique for discarding the fruit.
* food safety requirements.
* identifying the appropriate fruit for harvesting.
* the correct picking technique.
* the safe use of ladders or hydralada
Experience is preferred, although training is provided. The physical ability to climb and move orchard ladders is a must.
