Ashton is currently BEL Group’s largest dairy farm and will operate in its current form through to 31 May 2027. The farm is flat, well established, and supported by a strong, loyal, and experienced team.
For the upcoming season, Ashton will continue operating as a split-calving system. At the same time, the farm will begin a major development programme, including the rollout of full irrigation and significant infrastructure upgrades over the next 18 months. Once that transition is complete and the new operating model is in place, Ashton will move to a smaller, autumn-calving system.
We’re looking for a Future Farm Manager — someone ready for the next step, working alongside an on-farm senior manager and supported by the Operations Manager. You’ll share day-to-day responsibility during the current phase and contribute to the development programme and transition to the new farm system. From 1 June 2027, you’ll step into the permanent Farm Manager role on the new autumn-calving Ashton operation.
Now to 31 May 2027: 2,115 cows across 580ha, 60-bale rotary, split herd (spring and autumn), Protrack, feedpad.
From 1 June 2027: 1,170 cows across 259ha, 60-bale rotary, Protrack, feedpad, autumn calving.
About BEL Group
BEL Group is a large, family-owned dairy business in Central Hawke’s Bay, employing around 70 permanent staff across multiple farms and a central Business Services team. Values-led and people-focused, BEL Group is known for building long-term careers — with Working Together, Showing Pride, Delivering Results, and Being Responsible guiding how the business operates.
It’s also an exciting time to join. BEL Group is investing heavily in farm development and infrastructure, with major projects underway and a clear pasture-first strategy focused on getting the most from grass through simple, repeatable systems. With solid support behind the farms, this is a business where capable people are backed to grow and take on more.
The role
This is a step-up leadership role with two phases. Between now and 31 May 2027, the focus is on running a large, high-performing split-calving operation with strong routines, clear standards, and excellent execution — with hands-on support from the other on-farm senior manager and the Operations Manager as irrigation and infrastructure upgrades roll out.
From 1 June 2027, the role steps into Farm Manager of the new autumn-calving Ashton operation, embedding the system, team routines and performance expectations as the farm transitions into its long-term structure.
What we’re looking for
Proven experience leading a dairy team, with the confidence to operate at scale.
Strong systems discipline — someone who sets standards, runs clean routines, and follows through.
Sound pasture and feed management thinking, with comfort using tools and data to support decisions.
Strong people leadership and communication, with a practical, calm approach when things get busy.
A solid compliance mindset, tidy record keeping, and pride in presentation, assets and machinery care.
